Time to Walk Away

Previous topic - Next topic

Nick Ryder

Hi all.

I wrote this about three years ago and posted a demo version on Facebook. To cut a long story short, an established artist like it so much that they wanted to record a version of it. As it turned out, they altered some of the lyrics and wanted a 50/50 co-writing share which I wasn't happy about.

This song has also been covered by another artist which is weird because I never thought the song was that special. It's weird how other people see things so differently.

I've put a band together to play all my original songs, and the first gig is in late January. I will perform this song solo, just myself and the piano.

Here it is.

This is a beautiful piece @Nick Ryder

I can see why people want to cover it

As songwriters, we must NEVER under-estimate the power of simplicity

I think the emotional connection you establish in this is the key, through the lyric and (amazing) vocal performance - and a 3:31 song felt like about 30seconds as it just washed over me!

Well done, Nick.  This is a great song - and very classy production throughout.  I can see this working very well on stage with just a piano.

It's a shame about the attempted 50% credit swindle.  That's some cheek.

Hi Nick, I listened to this a few times last night - it's a beautiful song and great vocal delivery. Would love to hear the solo on piano version sometime.

Funny how the songs other people like aren't necessarily the ones you like yourself. Glad you thought enough of it to share it though.

Thank you. Interestingly, the vocal was take 1. I tried several other after that one and whilst most were thechnically better, none of the takes had the same emotion in the performance as the first take.

Yeah, very odd about the signwriting credit thing. I don't think its uncommon though. If I was desperate for the potential money and fame then I may have agreed, and that probably how they get people. It makes you wonder how many commercial releases this applies to.

We're doing a showcase gig in January which is being filmed, so I'll be sure to upload that performance to YouTube (assuming its any good :) )

@Nick Ryder Your song, "Time to Walk Away", is an excellent ballad. The piano, vocals, arrangement, and mix are all great. The only constructive suggestion I have is to introduce an acoustic guitar and slightly more drums that each coincide with the word park at the end of the line That moment in the park. Maybe carry a sustain along the line That moment in the that changes with the addition of the acoustic guitar and drums on the downbeat at the inflection point with the word park. But, honestly, it's really great exactly as it is. I enjoyed listening. Well done! ;D

Thank you.

This was officially released earlier this year, so there's no scope for any changes now.

However, I did try many different arrangements when I was recording it but ultimately, the simplest version seemed to work the best so I stripped a lot of other elements out before it went for mixing.

Nick, that is beautiful. I assume that the artist who wanted a 50:50 on the writing credit would also become the publisher or would use their publisher.  If so this is normal practice and they must have radio or physical royalties in mind - half of which would accrue to you.  Assuming they are spending, this seems prima facie to be something worth considering imho.

Hey, @Whiskey Club - Great to see you on here and thanks for the comments.

Yes, I think he did have something in mind. At the time he mentioned someone in the US might want to use it in a movie soundtrack.

However, I am not so desperate for money that I'd be willing to compromise the integrity of the songwriting credits. Maybe 20 years ago.........

This is a fantastic piece of music!
Very well done!

Has anyone else mentioned John Lennon yet?  I can definitely hear his style in the song and the delivery.  Not a criticism (at all), just an observation.  It's at his level.  I think 3:30 was too short to be honest.  This feels like an epic that has more to give.

Hey Nick how ya doing . Another nice gem of a song

Vicki

Looks like you have plenty of feedback on this one, so I'll just say it is beautiful! So sweet sounding.

Hi Nick,

Great song I really enjoyed it,

Skandha

I really think it's a great song, especially the chords are both original and familiar as it happens with masterpieces.
