They Just Don't Know

Hi everyone,

Well done @tone and @Boydie for getting the forum back!

This is a song that started on my acoustic, as most do I guess, with a simple descending part and quite a bit faster.  I thought it might stay like that to be honest, but I felt like I wanted it to build towards the end, so we have worked on it a lot to get here and I'll be interested to see what you think.

We'd like to put on our next album but there's a problem, apart from the obvious ones you might pick up as you go through. There's a sample in the mid8, a very obvious and well known one. I have emailed them to see if I can use it, pointing out that it's 2 old guys doing it for fun with the square root of zero. monthly listeners.  No reply, unsurprisingly!  I'm tempted to say so what, they won't hear it anyway  ;D

Anyway, what do you think?

Try to remember, try to keep track
Look to understand, when you had my back
There's been fears and there's been tears, so many let downs
And so many could have beens, going round and round and round my head

Chorus
My life's my own, pure and homegrown, my life's my own
My life's my own, not fully shown, my life's my own
They just don't know, what made me grow
They just don't know, what made me grow

There's no life bible, there's no guiding light
Who knew back then, knew what was right?
There's been times, and there's been signs, and things could define
And so many could have beens, going round and round and round my head

Chorus
My life's my own, pure and homegrown, my life's my own
My life's my own, not fully shown, my life's my own
They just don't know, what made me grow
They just don't know, what made me grow

Mid 8

Outro
They just don't know, what made me grow
They just don't know
They just don't know, what made me grow
They just don't know

I don't recognise the sample, but I might be an older guy than you  :-\

That said, I think the song works really well without the middle 8.  It kinda threw me when I heard it kick in.  It's quite a clash with the rest of the vibe the song has going, which is a great vibe.  The production is very good and keeps the ear interested throughout - and best yet, it really does support the song.

"Pure and homegrown" is a great description of one's life!

Mora Amaro La Loba

It's a great song and a wonderful lyric. Maybe the sound of general mix could have less treble? more low?Well, you know, each ear is a universe hahaha.
Coming back to the song you have reached a very good one!

@mattyoungmusic It's Linkin Park and I doubt I'm much younger than you  ;D   Thanks for the comments, trouble is I really struggle to have songs without a mid 8 but I'll keep it in mind.

@Mora Amaro La Loba Thanks, I know what you mean, it maybe is a bit harsh. I played it on a different system last night and thought that might be the case.  I'll take a look.

Indeed great to have the forum back and nice to hear some familiar contributors again. I'm really liking this track. It's very catchy with some really strong vocals. I'd agree that the mix is a tad harsh in places, but nothing that stopped me from enjoying this, and you've already said that you're on the case. A great arrangement. :)

Hi
Great song & arrangement
i feel it has a brit rock feel ..   i wouldn't worry about the middle 8 sample at this stage
it could be changed if needed

Great Stuff

@ChrisPrice Thanks Chris, much appreciated.  I'll definitely fix the harshness.

@subvibe Thanks, I'm not surprised you get a BritRock type feel from it.  I'm not too worried, it's only the rap, everything else is me and the end of the Rap vocal is me as well.
