Title: Cay Jo & The Void - When Silence Took Over
Post by: Cay Jo on Jul 05, 2026, 10:12 PM
Hi there,

I'm a german musician and songwriter and I recently released my debut album "Observer". I used to release singles as "Carlonely", some of which I presented here. I changed my name to "Cay Jo & The Void" but it's still just me doing everything :)

The song I'd like to present you is "When Silence Took Over" which I think is the most interesting song musically on the album. My idea was to write a song in the jazz influenced style of David Bowie's last album which of course has nothing to do with the finished song. Still, I think it is always a good starting point to try to write a song in the style of someone else because you're forced out of your comfort zone and it won't sound like the artist you're trying to copy anyway. I've done that a few times and I found out that even if the instrumental matches a certain style, my way of finding a vocal melody and my vocals make it different enough.

Lyrically, the song is part of the album which is a loose concept album based on observations about human behaviour, especially social behaviour. The observer introduces himself in the first song "The Observer (Open Your Eyes)" and shares his observations in the other songs. In my mind, the observer is the lonely guy sitting at the bar who is observing what the other people in the restaurant do. "When Silence Took Over" is about people who go crazy when short breaks in a conversation occur and who try to avoid that by bringing up new topics although it's not necessary.

Anyway, I'd be happy to get some feedback on the song itself, the arrangement, the mix and so on :)
