Do ya need it?

For working through initial ideas and getting them down,I very much do. I can't abide the distraction of other folk during this time. Unfortunately, these days I have little or no time alone which means zero productivity. I can't even read with others around, nevermind write. After a certain point I'm happy to share a song, but the germ has to grow to that point before I welcome the input of others. When I do finally get a chance to work alone I'm so wound up I can't function at all.

My last outburst of creativity yielded around a dozen songs in a fairly short period, but midway coincided with an intense intrusion of real life, thus the impetus was lost. I always want to strike when the iron is hot,but I'm forever out of time with those around me.

My job involves driving a van...and that's become pretty much the only place I can write lyrics.

Once I've got a basic tune going...I'll burn a demo cd and work out the words as I'm driving around.

Totally agree, have to make space. My space makers: dog (not really my choice) and bike (more my kind of thing). Some of my best ideas come when outside doing those things.

Also one of my best investments ever was a 80 buck fake Tele which is my downstairs guitar - i lucked out on getting a reasonable neck but don't care if it gets touched by children or dogs (in fact they are giving it a nice relic'ed look ;)). So it's always within reach even for 5 minutes before dinner - and also unplugged won't wake anyone up.

It's a compromise. Never enough time. But little by little...

Not recommended!

It's expensive to get there, there's solar winds and radiation, satellites, debris and ufo's to avoid, and trying to write or type while floating around in zero gravity would be really tricky so you'd have to forget trying to play the guitar too. And remember Sarah Brightman didn't want to sing up there so I say stay in your studio  :)

I am on topic?  ;D

Hehe personally I find my frame of mind is more important than space. I *can* write when I'm not alone in a room, but I much prefer to be alone. A lack of distractions is a luxury more than a necessity. I don't think it's that healthy for your creative self to be put on hold until you have the right combination of time & space. Some of my best lyrical ideas have come to me while doing the washing up, with the Mrs watching telly in the next room. The trick is to mug off the washing up and go write down your great ideas before they go cold. Even if it means dinner goes cold ;)
