Good thread - not that many great albums these days - not the way people tend to think about things I guess.

A few that definitely did at the time:

- another vote for High Land Hard Rain (first I ever bought)
- Dark Side of the Moon
- This is My Truth... Manic Street Preachers
- Southeastern - Jason Isbell
- Carry On - Chris Cornell
- Getz/Gilberto - Getz & Gilberto
- A Distant Shore - Tracy Thorn
and not sure if really on point but have to add
- Pillows and Prayers - Cherry Red Sampler Album...

Thought I'd check out High Land High Rain and the first song blew me away! What an amazing track

To name a few....

Appetite for Destruction - Guns n Roses
Less Talk More Rock - Propaghandhi
Mermaid Avenue - Bragg and Wilco
The Great Eastern - The Delgados
Rust Never Sleeps - Neil Young & Crazy Horse

Snapshot - UKSWF ;)

Wow some of you guy’s minds must have been blown to pieces with all that sonic stuff! From a songwriting perspective I’ve just had my mind “blown again” by Nick Cave- God Is In The House and Lana Del Rey- West Coast.

I am constantly reminded that I should be proud to embrace my songwriting influences. I sometimes try not to talk about them as I don't wish to invite too many comparisons.  Having said that, I firmly believe that I have my own voice so, I for me, this thread would be impoverished if I didn't recommend the albums:

Steve McQueen - Prefab Sprout
Jordan The Come back - Prefab Sprout

Paddy McAloon is in my opinion the finest songwriter of all time.
