Hey songsters.....

Here's another one from the cutting room floor. Its a simple song about getting old, being married for 20 years and questioning life in general. It's got a couple of 9 chords in there which I love using.

I don’t know
How to be the best I can without the cost of running out of
Time goes by,   twenty years have disappeared and we got old in the blink of an eye

How can it be, are you much the same as me?
Are we still the same inside or have we changed that much I just don’t know?

I don’t know
How to dance like I don’t care and wildly throw my arms upon in the air
Maybe it’s a sign
That I’m not as brave as I once was and you are thinking it’s a crime?
How can this be? Is this happening to me?

Yesterdays a world away
And I’m not saying that’s ok
We try to do the best we can
And make mistakes along the way
Or maybe I’m a fool and it’s ok?
Oh I don’t know
I don’t know

Will be the same again?
Perhaps we’ll find the answer at the end

And that’s all I know.

beautiful sad song..love sad songs, your production is always up there so no nits there my friend, at the end I thought the ..that's all I know bit was gonna be a sort of big repetative ending, which would've been good..like the end of Hey Jude....

superfine work.. 8)

You must have a whole great second album on that cutting room floor. We don’t listen to any mainstream music nowadays.  No time for it.  Between the wife and I, we must listen to 30 tracks a day - all from independent artists.  You are in the very upper echelon of that community imho.

Loved the intro and, if I am completely honest, I was hoping it would stay that simple and stripped back.  It’d be good to hear it with just you and a piano.  Wonderful song.

Cheers - John.

Hi Nick,

I'm glad you picked this one off the floor as it's a bit of a gem.  :)  The production is lush as usual and it boggles my mind that you are so humble in your production abilities when they sound pro to me.  ;) Perhaps it's a case of 'any suitably superior producer will appear as a god to an unadvanced producer' lol.  ;D

I really like the fluid feel to the structure/arrangement and the flow of the song works very well.

Top work as usual - maybe one day you'll lay an egg -but not today!  ;D

All the best,

CCB

My cutting room floor is certainly not of this quality 🤣.  It's really good, I love the piano intro, then the build, just perfect, really suits your voice as well.  I was't i love with that guitar part that pans across, might get used to it but it took me completely by surprise.  Second time round, I still wasn't sure.  I'll keep listening though!

A song about getting old? You wait till you get to my bloody age!! Joking apart, this is another beauty. What I love about your music is the excellent arrangements you conjure up. The orchestration here is just awesome. You must put a heck of a lot of work into these songs. It's very well worth it. Brilliant! :)

I really like this @Nick Ryder - cutting room floor you say? Hmmm - not sure why it was lying there.. Of course I throw a lot of songs away so maybe I do know why!!

I also feel that it could have been stripped back throughout with just vox and keys (I too love a 9 on keys) but I do like the build. Short and very sweet. A gorgeous little song with very relatable sentiments..

Thanks everyone who commented on this.

When I say "cutting room floor", it's just that this song and a few others didn't make it to the final cut for my last album release. I'd recorded about 25 songs but only 12 of them made it onto the album.

That's not to say I don't like them, its just that I did not feel they were up to the same standard as the ones that made it.

But then I often think who am I to judge? Maybe some people would prefer these to the released songs?

I love, love, love it! I am not sure if I would prefer it stay simple, because that would be awesome, but I also love the way it builds! Sometimes your voice seemed to get lost in the crowd but it was never gone. Absolutely lovely!

Thank you. That's very kind.

I'm learning that the only way to attract fans is to put a lot of time and effort into promoting yourself, and time is something I do not have as what spare time I do have, I prefer to spend it creating... Oh well, catch 22 I guess!!

Yeah basically, you got switch hats on promotion . Or hire someone to do it.
Investment basically , Even then , a ROI is tuff .
its rather mind boggling how many people put out music.

That's a home studio? wow - this is in a league of its own IMO.
Love the lyrics and progressions - great vox.
