The original is great but Disturbeds version of Sound Of Silence is stellar, the way it builds is just, wow!

The Beatles version of You Really Got a Hold of Me is far superior to the original by the Miracles.

The problem with any cover version of Hallelujah is they usually lose the humour of the original. That includes the Jeff Buckley version. Sorry.

One of my absolute favorite covers of all time. I can't say I like it better than the original, but just as much as...

Joe Cockers version of 'With a little help from my friends'   the only cover of a Beatles song that is actually better than the original..IMHO :)
Yep - that's the one that came to my mind first. I also think Jeff Healey's version of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" trumps the orig. song, mainly because of his awesome guitar work.

This cover version absolutely deserves to be mentioned:

Johnny Cash - Hurt

The Disturbed cover of The Sound Of Silence may not be better than the original, but it's pretty damn good!

I love love love Lana Del Rey's version of Cohen's Chelsea Hotel no.2. Totally faithful to the original but with vocals I prefer. Very tasteful cover.

Toots and the Maytals' version of "Take Me Home Country Roads" sounds like it was meant to be played as a reggae tune.

Bongwater's version of "The Drum" sent me on a quest to find and hear the Slapp Happy original, sparking a fairly big obsession with Slapp Happy for a while.
