My friend Robbie, recently sent me a photograph.  I was performing an acoustic set with Peter the vocalist from the band that I played in and wrote for.  I had forgotten about that particular performance.  It stirred one or two memories.  Peter had/has a voice that could charm a goddess.  We often performed at house parties as well as the venues we played.  After our performance, the guests would ask Peter to sing acapella.  He loved to sing the Hue and Cry song “Looking Out For Linda”, without accompaniment.  The audience would be mesmerised as Peter wowed them with his vocal ability “I was not looking for Linda but Linda found me; hiding away on the slow train home".  That was then and now,  I haven’t seen Peter for about 6 or 7 years since leaving my home town.  This is a song about the above scenario and my fondness for an old friend.  I allowed my memory to recall the great times and performances we enjoyed then dusted down a Fender Parlour (PM2) guitar for the lead acoustic on this recording.

and so, the stage was set; “A hush fell in the darkened room”…………..

Lullaby

Please sing a lullaby;
tell me all the places you have been.
Bold words set to dulcit tones.
show me all the places you have seen.

I remember when the music ceased to play;
a crowd of people gathered 'round to say"

Please sing a lullaby, "hiding out with Linda on the train".
A hush fell in the darkened room.
Mesmerise the audience again.

I doubt you'll ever soothe my weary thoughts.
Memories will live, yes they'll be.
Sing for me.
Sing for me.

A photograph appeared, you were there with me; a cold night in the north.
When you and I are older, will we care?  It's been so many years.

"Please sing a lullaby, tell me all the places you have been.

Please sing a lullaby.
Please sing a lullaby.

A nice story
Such stories are  bitter sweet
"A cold night in the north"
I've experienced many cold nights in the north.
I usually had somewhere to go
Sounds like 80's (the last decade when pop music was good).

Nice song, Paul 🙂
It's either this or that, then again it might be the other.

I can promise you a future of slow decline.

Don't eat the yellow snow

And there you have it.

Thanks @rightly.  I hated the synth sounds of the eighties as I think they ruined many fine songs but as you say, it was the last decade of quality pop songs.

A very nicely-crafted song, Paul @Paul V

"Looking for Linda" is such a great song!

I'd love to be able to sing a song really well...any song :)

Lucky guy, was Pete.

I enjoyed the chiming guitar muchly and that acoustic lead over the top here and there is lovely too.

You must have some great memories from those days.

Our gigs were always like a battlefield...for lack of anything approaching brilliance, we always felt we had to beat the audience into submission.

Excellent song!

Hello @PaulAds,  I have a mixture of memories. At times, I thought we were fantastic. We had so many laughs and were mates for many years but sadly I have bad memories too. A band is a gang and often very political.  The guys in the band will never know what I sacrificed to make us as good as we possibly could be. I poured my  heart and soul into everything that I wrote for the band. I doubt I could ever  do it again. Still Peter could really sing!
