Just received my first hate comment in years, but I just ignored it and deleted it. :)
Although it kinda took a stab at my self-confidence by saying I can't sing.

Just a little discussion, what do you do with hate comments?
I write songs about geek culture, fandoms, life, love, people, etc.
Hopefully you can relate :)

Hate comments ,isn`t that being a bit OTT.....can`t think of any `established` members on here being guilty of that ???if indeed it was this site..then again why mention it ,if it wasn`t....

I had a run in with someone on here in the early days..but it`s all sorted now. :D

I mean I've never heard you sing so don't take this personally, but instead of looking at it like 'hate' look at it like an oppurtunity for improvement. I guess if you want people to be honest, you've got to be prepared for brutal honesty, however there are also Internet trolls who spend their lives bringing people down anonymously, so keep that in mind.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, eh?

Hi Jess,

I think the best approach is to just let it wash over you. If there's anything useful you can take from it then do so otherwise just file it in the trash and delete from memory.

YouTube is notorious for negative comments for no reason and trollers, just take a look at almost any video and you'll find a bunch of them on there.

Ive not seen your YouTube channel but if you've been on there for a while I'm surprised you haven't had them before to be honest from some moron, just because they can.

Some people just need to bring others down to make themselves feel better.

If it was a seriously offensive comment, think about reporting it but generally I'd say don't let other peoples negativity affect you and just let it go.

HI EVERYONE
It's okay, this happens all the time...the other day someone congratulated me on lyrics I didn't write, it's all good ;D
And thanks Benjo, I mean, I was literally just quoting Kelly Clarkson lyrics, but I'm glad I got the message across

What should one do with hateful comments?   Well, the appropriate thing to do is to feel sorry for the poor unfortunate soul who is so consumed with self loathing that he/she has to make those hateful comments.

Want revenge?  .... you harm yourself.

Hate in return?   ....  you harm yourself.

Let it get you down  ...  you harm yourself in a way the other person could not.

Immediately force your mind to a position in which it realizes the pain a person has to be in before he/she attacks others, then let your natural compassion for that person's pain kick in.

And then, forcefully explain to YOURSELF that you it really doesn't hurt YOU when someone else expresses their unhappiness at themselves, even when you are the visible target.

That's what I would suggest.

What you can do to/for/about the "other person" is practically nothing.  What you have control over is what happens in your own mind.

The battlefield is in your mind.  You can't lose without your own consent.

It is just the, 'price of fame', you have the guts to put yourself out there  and their is the odd one who has something horrid to say. You were right to delete and ignore.
You can set up Youtube so you can read comments before they go on  screen and you can delete them before they go public.
"You can't sing", doesn't even make sense because you did sing!! I wish you well. Terry.

People are getting quite deep about this...maybe it wasn't a troll, the person might not of been deliberately trying to hurt you, they may have just been voicing their opinion, I am NOT saying you can't sing, because like I said I've never heard you, but if someone said I couldn't write a song, I wouldn't stop writing songs, that would just motivate me to become a better writer. To be honest, compliments are great but they never made anyone improve.
This forum is a pretty nice place, like there are no 'harsh' comments (that I've seen anyway) but in the real world (like YouTube) people can be vile to each other. I think you've got to kind of expect that kind of thing and look at it positively instead of negatively :)

You have to just ignore it, there's no other response that doesn't bring you down to their level.
