Hi guys
Here's another "old guy" song (similar to Empty Nest) which no-one is going to see as commercially viable. Well, that's OK by me! I mostly write for fun. I have a gospel-like tune written for it so try to hear a choir singing the chorus

I pulled the Sunday paper from my kitchen doors
Read the week's obituaries I'd been waiting for
My finger scanned the names for one I'd recognize
There he was - it said he passed away on wednesday night

I picked up my tattered yearbook - class of '42
Flipped it to the only page my bookmark ever knew
Drew a circle 'round his picture in that black-and-white
Now the only teenaged face that wasn't marked was mine

Everybody's gone - I'm the only one standing
Everybody's gone - every woman and man is
Everybody's gone - what I don't understand is

Didn't have to use my pen much in the early days
Just the odd unfortunate soul that some disease would take
Then the war took Ron and Murray, Sam and even Lou
And that year we lost a flurry of the girls there too

For a while I didn't take that book from off its shelf
But lately, every week I've heard that funeral bell
Now I sit here reminiscing as my teardrops fall
Where my picture says "MOST LIKELY TO OUT-LIVE US ALL"

Nice Lyrics!
But for me the verses sound more like a poem and i can't imagine them being sung.
The Chorus is great! i immedeatly had a melody in my mind. I'm looking forward to hear it

Yeah the verses are a bit meatier - but I have a draft melody that seems to work.

I think what I enjoy most about your lyrics Paul is that I seem to be able to relate to every one of them (maybe with the exception of the zombies.) Maybe I'm just at that age 

I just love story telling and you nail it everytime in that department.

Thanks Arkright - yeah this was inspired by an old person I know and pretty close to a true story. I guess we'll all get there eventually..

The chorus reads a bit funny with those lines ending on 'is' but no doubt you've worked that all out already. Don't know if you fit music to the lyric or work on both in conjuction?

I like the theme which, as Arkwright says, is an easy one to relate to if you've been no stranger to grey hairs for many a year.

As ever you've got a nice mix of wry humour and some hard-hitting truths in there.

As a desperately trying to give up(sometimes) smoker I like to think that I'll be that man wondering at the joke that I'm the last one left kicking!

Hi Cramer - thanks for the kind words. I do have a melody for the chorus (I almost always have a chorus melody when I write its lyrics), and I've stolen a  melody for the verses from another song - so still trying to invent one hehe. I guess we all sort of wanna be this guy, but be careful what you wish for!
