Nice to have the forum back...I had just joined and had posted exactly one song before it went offline.  Wondered what I'd done so wrong to make the site pack it in  ;D

Here's a song from last year about those lustful first months of a passionate relationship!

Thanks for listening,

I'm enjoying listening to your music. Really nice production here. I can hear a number of influences, mainly from way back. Especially like the guitar playing. Great song. :)

icystorm

@mattyoungmusic This is a very good song with a clear influence from the Beatles and Paul McCartney, Matt. Your lyrics are well-penned and your vocals are good. The title and theme are novel and interesting. My favorite parts of the track are the solid bass and lead guitar in the track. The song is well produced and the mix is clear. I enjoyed listening! Nice work! ;D

Cheers,
Joseph

@mattyoungmusic

I am LOVING this - it has a really great vibe, and I think @icystorm and @ChrisPrice are spot on about the range of influences jumping out, which is great to hear - I was also getting a strong"Small Faces" vibe

The performance is great, and I particularly like the layered vocals

There is a nice crisp and clear production - and I love the processed vocal elements

My only slight critique relates to the production side rather than the song itself...

It all sounds a little "harsh" and "in your face" to my ears. I think adding some warmth (e.g. bring up the bass and using EQ to "warm up" some of the guitars and the piano) would make this song even better IMHO

However - you have absolutely SMASHED the hard bit of creating a "vibe" - amazing job!!

I will definitely be looking out for more songs from you

Jambrains

This has a distinct retro feeling (in a good way).A solid write and well performed. I'm with @Boydie re the mix, it lacks a little "warmth" but I would not go as far as calling it harsh, it's a matter of taste I guess. My only criticism is, and know that I'm a guitar player at heart but still, the guitars may be a little bit "overused". Don't get me wrong, they are super nice but after a while the L/R guitars noodling away distracted me a little from the song itself.

Hi @mattyoungmusic ,

I remember hearing this before, possibly on the previous version of this forum. I enjoyed it then and I enjoy it now. The fact that I remembered it is testament that it is a good song.

Of particular note is the circular chord progression to fade.

More of this standard please!!

Commodore64

Lovely layered guitars going on.  Also really liked some of the production touches like the effects on the fading vocals at the end.  The fade out works liked a dream actually - a little unexpected too. I thought I could hear some of the influences too - chorus Beatlesy and shades of ELO perhaps, but that's a fine heritage to be inspired by. Great stuff.

Thanks very much for taking the time to listen, everyone.  And thanks for the kind feedback.  @Boydie and @Jambrains thanks very much for the mixing advice.  That's my weakest part of the process: getting my ears to listen critically to the balance of frequencies and energy.  The guitars on this one were done by an old bandmate from 30 years and 4000 miles ago.  It's the only time I have solicited and received musical collaboration on a song since I started writing again a few years ago.  Maybe I got a little too excited and overused the parts he ended up sending me  ;D

Guilty as charged for the Beatles/McCartney/ELO/etc influences.  It's not that I consciously try to sound like anything but myself, but with all that fine stuff filling my head for a lifetime it's bound to come out!

OleAnders

Great arrangement and song. Well done! Feels pretty timeless. Can hear a lot of the influences. Enjoyed you vocal delivery as well. No complaints!

Mora Amaro La Loba

I already knew your song and I liked it again, very good work, the mix sounds great, everything in its place. It's a very entertaining fusion, full of colors. @mattyoungmusic

I missed it on the old forum, but I'm glad i've caught it this time.  The influences may be old but the production is really up to date.  The layered lead parts in either ear is really nice.
